a bunch of basil that lasted four days. I figured \u2014 I can do better than this. Turns out I was right, and so can you.<\/p>\n<p>This guide is for complete beginners. No EC meters, no nutrient ratios, no recirculating systems. One bucket, one pump, one plant, grow food. Once you&#8217;ve done it once, everything else makes sense.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"hp-divider\">\n\n<h2 class=\"hp-h2\" id=\"what-is-it\">What Is Deep Water Culture?<\/h2>\n<p>Hydroponics means growing plants in water instead of soil. The <strong>Deep Water Culture (DWC)<\/strong> method is the simplest version \u2014 your plant&#8217;s roots hang directly in a bucket of nutrient-rich water. An air pump keeps the water oxygenated so the roots don&#8217;t drown. That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hp-tip\"><strong>Why it works better than soil:<\/strong> In soil, a plant spends energy pushing roots around searching for nutrients. In DWC, the nutrients are always right there. Plants grow 30\u201350% faster and typically produce more than soil-grown counterparts.<\/div>\n<p>I grow cherry tomatoes, peppers, and basil in mine. In the U.P. where we get maybe 4 months of outdoor growing season, having a hydro bucket in the basement running November through April means fresh food I grew myself all year long.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"hp-divider\">\n\n<h2 class=\"hp-h2\" id=\"materials\">What You Need<\/h2>\n<p>Everything on this list is available at a hardware store and Amazon. No specialty hydroponic shops needed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hp-mat-grid\">\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">5-gallon bucket with lid <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$5<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">2&#8243; or 3&#8243; net cup \/ pot <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$1<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Small aquarium air pump <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$8<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Air stone (bubbler disc) <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$2<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">3 feet of air tubing <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$2<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Hydroponic nutrients (2-part) <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$10<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">pH test kit or drops <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$6<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Clay pebbles (hydroton) <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$5<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Seedling or clone <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">~$2<\/span><\/div>\n  <div class=\"hp-mat\">Drill + 2&#8243; hole saw bit <span class=\"hp-mat-cost\">you own it<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-total\"><span>Total one-time cost:<\/span><span>~$35\u201341<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-tip\" style=\"margin-top:16px\"><strong>Money saver:<\/strong> Search Amazon for &#8220;aquarium starter kit&#8221; \u2014 most include the air pump, tubing, and air stone together for around $10\u201312.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-warn\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t use a clear bucket. Light hitting the nutrient solution causes algae. Use a black or opaque bucket, or wrap it in black plastic.<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"hp-divider\">\n\n<h2 class=\"hp-h2\" id=\"build\">Building It \u2014 Step by Step<\/h2>\n<p>About one hour from start to finish. Take your time on the drilling.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">1<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Drill the hole in the lid<\/strong><p>Use a 2&#8243; hole saw bit. Find center of bucket lid, drill one clean hole. Test net cup \u2014 it should sit snugly with its lip resting on the lid and not fall through.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">2<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Drill the air hole on the side<\/strong><p>Use a \u00bc&#8221; drill bit near the top rim of the bucket side. This is where air tubing exits to connect to the pump. Keep it near the top, above waterline.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">3<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Set up the air stone<\/strong><p>Drop air stone into the bottom of the empty bucket. Thread tubing through the side hole, connect to the air stone inside. Connect the other end to the air pump outside. Don&#8217;t turn it on yet.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">4<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Fill with water \u2014 not all the way<\/strong><p>Fill until water is about <strong>1 inch below the bottom of your net cup<\/strong>. This air gap is critical \u2014 roots need oxygen above the waterline too. If using tap water, let it sit overnight to off-gas chlorine.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">5<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Add nutrients<\/strong><p>Follow package directions exactly. Most are a 2-part system \u2014 add them separately and stir between. <strong>Start at half-strength<\/strong> for seedlings.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">6<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Test and adjust pH<\/strong><p>Target: <strong>5.5 \u2013 6.5<\/strong>. Most tap water is 7.0\u20138.0 \u2014 too alkaline. Add a few drops of pH Down, stir, retest. This single step matters more than almost anything else.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">7<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Plant your seedling<\/strong><p>Rinse clay pebbles thoroughly under running water for several minutes. Fill net cup halfway, nestle seedling in center, fill in around it. Roots should just touch or barely reach the water.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"hp-step\"><div class=\"hp-step-num\">8<\/div><div class=\"hp-step-body\"><strong>Turn on the pump \u2014 leave it on<\/strong><p>Plug it in. You should see steady bubbles from the air stone. The pump runs 24\/7 \u2014 no timer. Constant aeration is what makes DWC work. Never turn it off.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"hp-tip\"><strong>You&#8217;re done.<\/strong> Check every 2\u20133 days. Top off water as plant drinks. Check pH weekly. Full reservoir change every 1\u20132 weeks. That&#8217;s the whole maintenance routine.<\/div>\n\n<hr class=\"hp-divider\">\n\n<h2 class=\"hp-h2\" id=\"nutrients\">Water, Nutrients, and pH<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"hp-h3\">Water<\/h3>\n<p>Tap water works fine. If heavily chlorinated, sit it out 24 hours first. Keep temperature between 65\u201372\u00b0F. Cold water holds less oxygen and slows nutrient uptake.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"hp-h3\">Nutrients<\/h3>\n<p>Plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. In soil those come from organic matter. In hydroponics you add them directly. A basic 2-part liquid nutrient system covers everything from seedling to harvest.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hp-warn\"><strong>Don&#8217;t skip nutrients.<\/strong> Plain water grows nothing but weak, pale plants. Add nutrients from day one.<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"hp-h3\">pH \u2014 The One That Trips Everyone Up<\/h3>\n<p>pH controls whether your plant can actually absorb the nutrients. Even perfectly nutrient-rich water does nothing if the pH is wrong. This is called nutrient lockout and it&#8217;s the #1 cause of hydroponic failure.<\/p>\n<table class=\"hp-table\">\n  <thead><tr><th>pH Level<\/th><th>Effect on Plant<\/th><\/tr><\/thead>\n  <tbody>\n    <tr><td>Below 5.0<\/td><td class=\"bad\">Too acidic \u2014 nutrient burn, root damage<\/td><\/tr>\n    <tr><td>5.5 \u2013 6.5<\/td><td class=\"good\">\u2713 Sweet spot \u2014 full nutrient absorption<\/td><\/tr>\n    <tr><td>6.5 \u2013 7.0<\/td><td>Acceptable but watch it<\/td><\/tr>\n    <tr><td>Above 7.0<\/td><td class=\"bad\">Too alkaline \u2014 nutrient lockout, yellow leaves<\/td><\/tr>\n  <\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n<hr class=\"hp-divider\">\n\n<h2 class=\"hp-h2\" id=\"plants\">Best Plants to Start With<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"hp-h3\">Start here:<\/h3>\n<ul style=\"margin:12px 0 20px;padding-left:22px;line-height:2.2\">\n  <li><strong>Cherry tomatoes<\/strong> \u2014 faster than full-size, forgiving, prolific<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Lettuce and spinach<\/strong> \u2014 ready in 3\u20134 weeks, almost impossible to fail<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Basil<\/strong> \u2014 thrives in DWC, grows fast, smells incredible<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Peppers<\/strong> \u2014 take longer but produce heavily<\/li>\n  <li><strong>Green onions<\/strong> \u2014 nearly impossible to kill, ready fast<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"hp-tip\"><strong>U.P. growers:<\/strong> Start tomatoes and peppers from seed in February under a cheap grow light.
