Titus
Chapter 1 of 3
1From Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God's chosen ones and the knowledge of the truth that comes through the righteousness of God, 2and in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the creation of the world. 3At his appointed time he revealed his word through our preaching, which was entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior. 4To Titus, my son whom I love in love and in faith: Peace to you, and grace and mercy from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. 5The reason I left you in Crete was so that you would put in order what remained and appoint elders in every city, as I instructed you. 6An elder should be a man of good character who has married only one wife, against whom no one can say anything evil, and who has believing children who are not accused of wild living and are not unruly but obedient. 7A bishop must be appointed who is beyond reproach and impartial, as a steward of God. He must not be quick-tempered but sensible, not a heavy drinker of wine, not quick to strike with his hand, and not a lover of empty gain. 8He must love strangers and do good. He must keep himself pure. He must be righteous, kind, gentle, patient, and self-controlled, well taught in the word of the faith, 9able to instruct with the teaching of life and to refute those who argue against it. 10For there are many who are unruly, and their talk is empty. They lead astray people whose hearts are clouded, 11especially those from among the Jews, whose mouths must be stopped. They overturn whole households and teach what they should not, for shameful gain. 12One of them, their own prophet, said this about them: "Cretans are flatterers and liars, always wicked beasts and idle bellies." And this testimony about them is true. 13For this reason rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith 14and not bring in myths and human rules that turn people away from the truth. 15To the pure, everything is pure. But to the defiled who do not believe, nothing is pure. 16Their thinking is defiled. In their hearts they claim to know God, but by their deeds they deny him. They are defiled and faithless, and worthless for any good work. ‹
