1 Timothy

Chapter 1 of 6
1From Paul, apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ by the command of God our Savior and of Jesus Christ our hope, 2to Timothy, my son whom I love in the faith. Peace to you, and mercy and grace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. 3As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, stay on in Ephesus so that you can warn certain people not to bring in a different teaching, 4and not to bring in myths and idle talk that they invent to lead others astray. They stir up speculation and abandon God's law of faith. 5The goal of the command is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and faith without doubt. 6Some have wandered from these things and turned to empty talk. 7They want to be teachers, yet they do not understand what they themselves are reading. 8We know that the law is good for the one who keeps it lawfully. 9We also know that the law is not laid down for the righteous, but for sinners and the deceitful and the rebellious, for those who have left righteousness and are impure of heart, for those who kill their fathers and mothers, for those who kill their relatives, and for murderers, 10for the sexually immoral and those who sleep with another man's wife, for kidnappers, liars, and those who swear falsely, and for whatever else opposes the teaching of life, 11which is the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, entrusted to me. 12I thank the one who trusted me and strengthened me in Christ Jesus our Lord, for he made me faithful for his service, 13even though I was once a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man. Yet he had mercy on me, because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14And the grace of God overflowed for me, with the faith and love of Jesus Christ our Lord. 15This saying is trustworthy and deserves to be accepted by everyone: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, and I am the foremost of them. 16But he had mercy on me so that Jesus Christ might display his wonders and his great patience in me, and so that I might be an example to those who believe in him for eternal life. 17To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. 18I entrust this command to you, my son Timothy, in keeping with the prophecy made about you, so that you may stand strong in every good fight, 19holding on to faith and a good conscience. For there are some who have turned away from the faith and been shipwrecked. 20Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander. I have handed them over to Satan to be disciplined, so that they learn not to blaspheme.
