2 Corinthians

Chapter 1 of 13
1From Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of the congregation of God in the city of Corinth, and to all the saints in the land of Achaia. 2Peace to you, and grace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. 3Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercy and the God of all comfort. 4He comforts us in all our suffering, so that we can comfort all who suffer with the same comfort God has given us. 5Just as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our comfort also overflows through Christ. 6If we suffer, it is so that you may be saved and comforted. If we are comforted, it is so that you may be comforted and grow strong in enduring the same suffering we also endure. 7Our hope for you is firm. Just as you share in our sufferings, so you also share in our comfort. 8Brothers, I want you to know how we suffered in Asia. They loaded us down far beyond our strength, until we despaired even of life. 9We had resigned ourselves to death, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God, who raises the dead and who rescued us from so great a death. 10We trust him to rescue us again, while you help us by your prayers, so that we may find favor through the prayers of many, and you too may be praised by everyone. 11For this is our boast and the witness of our freedom, through his mercy and his turning toward us. [unclear in the Ge'ez] 12By the grace of God we have lived in the world, not by human teaching, and all the more so among you. 13We write you nothing except what you read and understand and what is plain to you. 14I trust that you will always understand this, just as you have come to know us in part: that we are your pride, and you are ours, on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15With this joy and confidence I planned to come to you first, so that you might receive a double grace. 16I meant to go on to Macedonia and come back to you from there, and then you would send me on to the land of Judea. 17So when I made this plan, did I act like a fool? Do I make my plans by human standards? Your word should be either yes, yes or no, no. 18God is faithful, and our word was not false. It was not a mixture of yes and no. 19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we preached to you (I, Paul, with Silvanus and Timothy), was not yes and no. In him it has always been yes. 20Everything God promised has proved true in Christ. That is why, through him and for his sake, we say Amen and give glory to God. 21It is God who makes us firm together with you in faith in Christ. 22Through him he anointed us, sealed us, and gave us the pledge of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. 23I call God as witness upon my soul that it was to spare you that I did not come to Corinth. 24Not that we force you to believe. We only help you toward your joy, for you stand by faith and hold firm in the faith.
