Chapter 1 of 16
1From Paul, servant of our Lord Jesus Christ, an apostle who was called and set apart for the teaching of the gospel of God, 2the gospel he promised long ago through the mouth of his prophets and in his holy scriptures, 3concerning his Son, who was born and came from the line of David in human flesh, 4and who was shown to be the Son of God by his power and by his Holy Spirit, when Jesus Christ our Lord rose from the dead. 5Through him we received grace and were appointed apostles, so that we might bring the message to the nations and they might believe in his name. 6And so you too have now become people called in Jesus Christ. 7To all who are in the land of Rome, God's beloved, his chosen and his holy ones: peace to you, and grace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. 8First, I give thanks to God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is reported throughout the whole world. 9God is my witness, the one I serve with all my spirit in the teaching of his Son, that I remember you in my prayers continually. 10I ask that God, by his will, may open a way for me to come to you. 11For I long to see you, so that you may receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and so that your hearts may rejoice because you share the faith with me. 12I want you to know, brothers, that I have often wanted to come to you, but I have been held back until now. 13Even so, I hope to find some fruit among you, as I have among the other nations: among Gentiles and country people, among the wise and the foolish. 14For I am bound to teach every person. 15And all the more I am eager to teach you who live in the land of Rome. 16I am not ashamed to preach his gospel, because it is the power of God that gives life to all who believe in it, to the Jew first and then to the Gentile as well. 17In it the righteousness and justice of God are revealed, for he makes righteous by faith those who believe in it. As the scripture says, "The righteous will live by faith." 18The wrath of God comes from heaven on every sinful and wicked person who knows the truth and twists it by wickedness. 19For the knowledge of God is plain to them; God has shown it to them. 20What cannot be seen of God has been known since the creation of the world through what he made, by reflection and understanding. In this way his eternal power and divinity are known. 21So they have nothing to plead in their defense. Although they knew God, they did not praise him and glorify him as God. Instead they dealt falsely with him, became corrupt in their thinking, and their hearts were darkened. 22While they wanted to be wise, they became fools. 23They exchanged the glory of the immortal God and made it into an image shaped like mortal man, and like cattle, wild beasts and birds. 24For this reason he handed them over and abandoned them, so that they defiled themselves and degraded their own selves. 25They turned God's truth into a lie. They worshiped and served what was made and forsook the Creator of all things, who is God, blessed forever and ever. Amen. 26For this reason God gave them over to an evil punishment. Their women abandoned their nature and took up what is not natural to them. 27In the same way their men also left their women and burned with lust. They turned to one another, man with man, and did shameful things. But they will receive their penalty, and their error will come back on their own heads. 28Since they did not keep God in their hearts, God in turn gave them a foolish mind, to do what is not fitting. 29They are full of every kind of wickedness, evil, malice and greed. They are full of envy, slanderers, murderers, deceivers and schemers, arrogant, evil in habit and in character, 30gossips, mockers, quarrelers, proud, insulting, rebellious, liars, haters of the Lord, violent, 31senseless, faithless, and inventors of evil. 32They have no mercy, though they themselves know God's judgment, that whoever does such things deserves death. Not only do they do these things themselves, they also entice others and lead them into it.
