Chapter 1 of 28
1In my first book, Theophilus, I wrote about everything our Lord Jesus Christ began to do and to teach, 2until the day he ascended, after he had given his commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3These are the ones to whom he showed himself alive after his death, revealing himself with many signs over forty days. He appeared to them, spoke with them, and told them about the kingdom of God. 4While he was eating with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father. 5He said to them, "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." 6When they had gathered together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time you will restore the kingdom to the children of Israel?" 7He answered them, "It is not for you to know the times and seasons that the Father has set by his own authority alone. 8But when the Holy Spirit comes down on you, you will receive power, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9As he was saying this, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him. He ascended into heaven while they were watching him, and he was hidden from their eyes. 10Then two men dressed in white appeared to them and stood beside them. 11They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who has ascended from you into heaven, will come again in the same way you saw him go up into heaven." 12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, about the distance a man may walk on the Sabbath. 13When they reached their lodging, they went up to the upper room where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Matthew, Bartholomew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of Joseph. 14All of these devoted themselves to prayer together, along with the women, Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers, where about a hundred and twenty people were gathered, and said to them, 16"Listen, brothers. The word of Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke through the mouth of David about Judas, who became the guide for those who arrested the Lord Jesus. 17He was counted among us and had his share in this ministry. 18Then he bought a field with the wages of his wickedness. He fell headlong to the ground, his side burst open, and all his bowels poured out. 19The news of it was heard by everyone living in Jerusalem, and the field he bought with his wages was named in their own language Hakeldama, which means Field of Blood. 20As the book of Psalms says, 'Let his home be deserted, and let no one live in it,' and 'Let another take his office.' 21So one of these men who have been with us all this time, while our Lord Jesus Christ came and went among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us, must become a witness with us of his resurrection." 23They put forward two men: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know every heart. Show us which one of these two you have chosen 25to take up the work of this apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his own place." 26They cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles. 67And on the fourteenth day we set out. [unclear in the Ge'ez] 68After three days Paul sent word. This Luke came from the city of Antioch, which is in the land of Syria and is renowned among its neighbors. He was blessed in writing the Gospel, for he was a great physician in Antioch. We know for certain that his words are medicine for the soul. He died at the age of eighty years.
