Matthew

Chapter 1 of 28
1The book of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers. 3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron was the father of Ram. 4Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon was the father of Salmon. 5Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed was the father of Jesse. 6Jesse was the father of David the king. David the king was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah. 7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam was the father of Abijah, and Abijah was the father of Asa. 8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram, and Joram was the father of Ahaziah. Ahaziah was the father of Joash, Joash was the father of Amaziah, and Amaziah was the father of Uzziah, who was also called Azariah. 9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham was the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh was the father of Amos, and Amos was the father of Josiah. 11Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. 12After the exile to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud was the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim was the father of Azor. 14Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok was the father of Achim, and Achim was the father of Eliud. 15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar was the father of Matthan, and Matthan was the father of Jacob. 16Jacob was the father of Joseph, the betrothed of Mary, from whom was born the Lord Jesus, who is called Christ. 17So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations. From David to the exile to Babylon were fourteen generations. And from the exile to Babylon to Christ were fourteen generations. All the generations from Abraham to Christ were forty-two. 18This is how the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ came about. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, and before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19Joseph, her betrothed, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her. So he decided to leave her quietly. 20While he was thinking this over, an angel of God appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the child to be born of her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22All this happened to fulfill what God had spoken through the prophet, who said, 23"Look, a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and his name will be called Emmanuel," which means "God with us." 24When Joseph rose from his sleep, he did as the angel of God had commanded him and took Mary as his wife. 25But he did not know her until she had given birth to her firstborn son. And they named him Jesus.
