Malachi
Chapter 1 of 4
1The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel, by the hand of his messenger. Take it to heart. 2"I have loved you," says the LORD. But you ask, "How have you loved us?" "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" says the LORD. "Yet I loved Jacob, 3and Esau I hated. I have laid waste his territories and turned his inheritance into a wilderness. 4Edom says, 'Look, we have fallen, but we will come back and rebuild the ruins.' This is what the LORD Almighty says: You may build, but I will tear down. It will be called the land of lawlessness, and your own eyes will see it, a people the LORD has condemned forever. 5And you will say, 'Great is the LORD beyond the borders of Israel.' 6A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. If I am your father, where is the honor you owe me? And if I am your master, where is your fear of me? says the LORD Almighty. For you priests have defiled my name, and you ask, 'How have we defiled your name?' 7By placing defiled bread on my altar. And you ask, 'How have we defiled it?' By saying, 'The table of the LORD is contemptible, and the food set on it is despised.' 8When you bring a blind animal for sacrifice, is that not wrong? And when you bring the lame or the sick, is that not wrong? Try offering it to your governor! Will he accept it from you or show you favor? says the LORD Almighty. 9Now plead before the face of the LORD your God and ask him. This has come from your own hands. Will he show you favor? says the LORD Almighty. 10Because of you the doors are shut, and you do not kindle fire on my altar for nothing. I take no pleasure in you, says the LORD Almighty, and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is praised among the nations, and from every land they bring incense to my name and a pure offering, for my name is great among all the nations, says the LORD Almighty. 12But you profane it by saying, 'The table of the LORD is contemptible, and the food on it is despised.' 13You say, 'What a burden this is!' and I have blown it away, says the LORD Almighty. You bring what was stolen, the lame and the sick, to my altar. Even if you bring an offering, I will not accept it from your hands, says the LORD Almighty. 14Cursed is everyone who has a male in his flock and makes a vow, yet while he is able, sacrifices a blemished animal to the LORD. For I am a great King, says the LORD Almighty, and my name is renowned among all the nations. ‹
