Haggai
Chapter 1 of 2
1In the second year of the reign of King Darius, in the sixth month, at the new moon, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying, "Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the people of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and say to them: 2This is what the LORD Almighty says: This people says, 'The time has not come to build the house of the LORD.'" 3Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying, 4"Is it time for you to live in paneled houses while this house of mine lies in ruins? 5Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: Think carefully in your hearts about your ways. 6You have sown much and brought in little. You eat but are not satisfied; you drink but are not refreshed; you put on clothes but are not warm; and whoever earns wages puts them into a bag full of holes. 7This is what the LORD Almighty says: Think about your ways. 8Go up to the mountain, cut timber, and build the house, and I will take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD. 9You looked for much, and it turned out to be little. You brought it home, and I blew it away. Why? says the LORD Almighty. Because my house lies in ruins, while every one of you strengthens his own house. 10That is why the sky holds back its rain from above, and the earth does not yield its fruit. 11I will bring a sword upon the land and upon the mountains, upon the grain, the wine, and the oil, upon people and animals, and upon all the work of their hands." 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the people of Judah, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people listened to the voice of the LORD their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, since the LORD their God had sent him to them. And the people feared before the LORD. 13Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, said to the people, "I am with you, says the LORD." 14The LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, of the people of Judah, the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They came and did the work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God. ‹
