Zephaniah
Chapter 1 of 3
1The word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah. [unclear in the Ge'ez] 2Everything will be utterly destroyed from the face of the earth, says the LORD. 3People and animals will perish; the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea will perish. The sinners will be brought low, and I will wipe out the lawless from the face of the earth, says the LORD. 4I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem, and I will wipe out from this land the names of Baal and the names of the idol priests, 5and those who bow down to the stars of the sky on the rooftops, and those who swear by the name of the LORD and by their king, 6and those who turn away from the LORD and do not obey the LORD. 7Tremble before the face of the LORD God, for the day of the LORD is near. The LORD has prepared his sacrifice and consecrated his chosen guests. 8On the day of the LORD's sacrifice I will punish the officials and the king's house and all who dress in foreign clothing. 9On that day I will openly punish all those at the gates who fill the house of the LORD their God with violence and deceit. 10On that day, says the LORD, there will be a sound of wailing from the gate of the slayers, a howling from within, and a great slaughter on the hills. 11Weep, you who live in the place of slaughter, for all the people have become like Canaan, and all who pride themselves on gold have been rooted out. 12On that day, says the LORD, I will search Jerusalem with a lamp, and I will punish the men who despise their law, who say, "The LORD will do neither good nor harm." 13Their wealth will be lost and their houses plundered. They will build houses but not live in them, and plant vineyards but not drink their wine. 14For the great day of the LORD is near; it has drawn close and comes very fast. The sound of the day of the LORD is bitter and harsh. 15That day is a fierce day, a day of trial, a day of pain and distress, a day of ruin and destruction, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and fog, 16a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and the lofty towers. 17I will bring distress on people, and they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. 18Neither their gold nor their silver will save them on the day of the LORD's wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of his jealousy, for he will swiftly destroy all who live on the earth. ‹
