Obadiah
Chapter 1 of 1
1The vision that Obadiah saw. This is what the LORD says concerning Edom: I have heard a report from the LORD, and he has sent a messenger among the nations: "Rise up, and let us rise against her and fight her." 2Look, your heart is small, yet you have exalted yourself, you who live in the clefts of the rock and build your house on high, who say in your heart, "Who will bring me down to the ground?" 4Even if you soar like an eagle and set your nest among the stars, I will throw you down from there, says the LORD. 5If thieves came to you, or robbers by night, where would you have been thrown? Would they not steal only what they needed? And if grape pickers came to you, would they not leave you some gleanings? 6How Esau has been searched out, and his hidden treasures seized! 7They have driven you to your border. The men who swore alliance with you have fought you; your friends have attacked you and overpowered you. Those beneath you, who show you no mercy, have set a trap for you. 8On that day, says the LORD, I will destroy the wise from Edom and bring to nothing the counsel of the land of Esau. 9Your warriors of Teman will be terrified, so that people will be wiped out from the territory of Esau. 10Because of the sin of slaughter against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be wiped out forever and ever. 11For you stood utterly opposed on the day another people carried them captive, when the enemy grew strong and entered his gates and divided up Jerusalem by lot, and you too were like one of them. 12You showed your brother no pity on that day, the day of the enemy. You should not have gloated over the people of Judah when they were destroyed, nor boasted with your mouth on the day of their distress. 13You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their trouble, nor looked on without pity at their affliction when they were uprooted, nor laid hands on their forces when they were destroyed. 14You should not have taken vengeance on those who escaped, to destroy them, nor caught those who were left, to torment them, on the day they were broken. 15For the day of the LORD is near upon all the nations. As you have done, so your repayment will be: I will bring it back on your own head. 16Just as you drank on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink wine. They will drink and go down, and be as though they had never been created. 17But on Mount Zion there will be deliverance, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will take possession of those who had dispossessed them. 18The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble. They will burn among them and consume them, and no one will be left of the house of Esau, for the LORD has spoken. 19The people of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau, and the people of the Shephelah the land of the Philistines. They will possess the mountain of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin and Gilead with their districts. 20This first band of exiles of the children of Israel will hold the land of Canaan as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem as far as Ephrathah, and they will possess the cities of the Negev. 21Those who are saved will go up from Mount Zion to bring judgment on the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom will belong to the LORD. ‹
