Joel

Chapter 1 of 3
1The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Bethuel. 2Hear this, you elders, and listen, all who live in the land: has anything like this happened in your days or in the days of your fathers? 3Tell it to your children, and let your children tell their children, and their children the next generation. 4What the cutting worm left, the locust ate; what the locust left, the grasshopper ate; and what the grasshopper left, the caterpillar ate. 5Wake up, you who drink wine, and weep! Wail, all you who drink wine to get drunk, for joy and gladness have been cut off from your mouth. 6For nations have come up into the land, strong and beyond number. Their teeth are lions' teeth, and their jaws are a lion cub's. 7They have made my vine a wasteland and broken my fig tree. They searched it, stripped it bare, and threw it down, so its branches turned white. 8Weep to me like a bride wrapped in sackcloth for the husband of her youth. 9Grain offering and drink offering have been cut off from the house of the LORD. Mourn, you priests who offer the sacrifices. 10For the fields are ruined and the land mourns, because the grain is ruined, the wine has dried up, and the oil has failed. 11The farmers are ashamed, and the vinedressers weep for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the fields has perished. 12The vine has dried up and the fig tree has withered. The pomegranate, the palm, the apple, and all the trees of the field have dried up, and the joy of humankind has turned to shame. 13Mourn and put on sackcloth, you priests; weep, you who offer sacrifices. Go, lie down in sackcloth, you who sacrifice to the LORD, for sacrifice and drink offering have ceased from the house of the LORD. 14Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders and everyone who lives in the land into the house of our God, and cry out together to the LORD. 15Alas, alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near, and it comes like ruin upon ruin. 16Before your eyes the food is cut off from the house of your God, and joy and gladness with it. 17The heifers have perished in their stalls, the storehouses are ruined, and the barns are torn down, for the grain has withered. 18What can we store up now? The herds of cattle weep, because their pasture is gone, and the flocks of sheep have perished. 19To you, O LORD, I cry out, for fire has consumed the beauty of the wilderness, and flame has burned the trees of the forest. 20The wild animals look up to you, for the springs of water have dried up and fire has consumed the beauty of the wilderness.
