Amos
Chapter 1 of 9
1The word of the LORD that came to Amos, one of the herdsmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 2He said: "The LORD roars from Zion and raises his voice from Jerusalem. The shepherds' pastures mourn, and the top of Carmel dries up." 3The LORD says: "For three sins of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn back my punishment, because they sawed the pregnant women of Gilead with iron saws. 4I will send fire on the house of Hazael, and it will consume the foundations of the son of Hadad. 5I will break the bars of Damascus. I will cut off the inhabitants from the plain of Aven, and I will uproot the people from the men of Haran. The people of Syria will be carried away captive," says the LORD. 6This is what the LORD says: "For three sins of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn back my punishment, because they carried off the captives of Solomon to hand them over to Edom. 7I will send fire on the walls of Gaza, and it will consume its foundations. 8I will cut off the inhabitants of Ashdod, and the people of Ashkelon will perish. I will turn my hand against Ekron, and the rest of the Philistines will perish," says the LORD. 9This is what the LORD says: "For three sins of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn back my punishment, because they handed over the captives of Solomon to Edom and did not remember the covenant of brothers. 10I will send fire on the walls of Tyre, and it will consume its foundations." 11This is what the LORD says: "For three sins of Edom, and for four, I will not turn back my punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity on the earth. He tore at him in his anger and kept up his fury without end. [unclear in the Ge'ez] 12I will send fire on Teman, and it will consume its foundations." 13This is what the LORD says: "For three sins of the Ammonites, and for four, I will not turn back my punishment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead to enlarge their territory. 14I will kindle fire on the walls of Rabbah, and it will consume its foundations with a war cry on the day of battle, with a storm on the day of its destruction. 15Their kings, their rulers and their priests will go into captivity together," says the LORD. ‹
