Chapter 1 of 36
1The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt. He said to him, 2"Take a census of the whole assembly of the people of Israel by their tribes and by their ancestral houses, listing the names one by one. 3Every male twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel who goes out with the army, you shall register by their divisions. 4You and Aaron shall register them. 5And one man from each tribe, a leader of his tribe from among their ancestral houses, shall be with you. 6These are the names of the men who will stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur. 7From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 8From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab. 9From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar. 10From Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. 11From the descendants of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 12From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni. 13From Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 14From Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran. 15From Gad, Eliasaph son of Reuel. 16From Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." 17These were the chosen ones of the assembly, the leaders of their tribes by their clans. They were the chiefs of Israel. 18Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named one by one. 19They gathered the whole assembly on the first day of the second month, in the second year, and they registered them by their clans, by their tribes, and by the number of their names, from twenty years old and upward, every male head by head, 20as the LORD had commanded Moses. So they registered them at Mount Sinai. 21The descendants of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 22the number registered from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. 23The descendants of Simeon, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 24the number registered from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. 25The descendants of Judah, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 26the number registered from the tribe of Judah was 74,700. 27The descendants of Issachar, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 28the number registered from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400. 29The descendants of Zebulun, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 30the number registered from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400. 31The descendants of Joseph, that is, the descendants of Ephraim, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 32the number registered from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500. 33The descendants of Manasseh, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 34the number registered from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200. 35The descendants of Benjamin, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 36the number registered from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400. [unclear in the Ge'ez] 37The descendants of Gad, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 38the number registered from the tribe of Gad was 45,750. 39The descendants of Dan, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 40the number registered from the tribe of Dan was 72,700. 41The descendants of Asher, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 42the number registered from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. 43The descendants of Naphtali, by their clans, their families, and their ancestral houses, by the number of their names, head by head, every male twenty years old and upward, everyone able to go out with the army: 44the number registered from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. 45This is the census that Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel took, twelve men, one man from each tribe, each from the tribe of his ancestral house. 46The total number of the people of Israel by their divisions, from twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel able to go to war, was 603,550. 47But the Levites were with the tribe of their own descent, and they were not registered among the people of Israel. 48The LORD spoke to Moses and said to him, 49"Be careful not to register the tribe of Levi, and do not include their number among the people of Israel. 50Appoint the Levites over the tent of meeting, over all its furnishings, and over everything that belongs to it. They are the ones who will carry the tent and all its furnishings, and they are the ones who will serve in it. They shall camp around the tent. 51When the tent is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tent is to stop, they shall set it up. Any outsider who joins them in going near shall die. 52The people of Israel shall camp each man beside his neighbor, and each man by his own command, according to their divisions. 53But the Levites shall camp all around the tent of meeting, so that no wrongdoing comes upon the people of Israel. The Levites shall keep the charge of the tent of meeting." 54The people of Israel did everything the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. That is what they did.
