Baruch

Chapter 1 of 5
1These are the words of the book that Baruch son of Neriah, son of Mahseiah, son of Zedekiah, son of Hasadiah, son of Hilkiah, wrote in Babylon, 2in the fifth year, on the seventh day of the month, at the time when the Persians captured Jerusalem and burned it with fire. 3Baruch read the words of the book in the hearing of Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and in the hearing of all the people who came to hear the book, 4and in the hearing of the nobles and the king's sons, the elders, and all the people from the greatest to the least, all who lived in Babylon by the river Sud. 5They wept, fasted and prayed before the LORD. 6They also collected money, each person as much as he was able, 7and they sent it to Jerusalem to Joakim the priest, son of Hilkiah, son of Shallum, and to the priests and to all the people who were with him in Jerusalem. 8This was when Baruch received the vessels of the house of the LORD that had been carried off from the temple, to return them to the land of Judah, on the tenth day of the month of Sivan. These were the silver vessels that Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, had made 9after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken Jeconiah, the princes, the captives, the mighty men and the people of the land away from Jerusalem and carried them to Babylon. 10They said, "We are sending you money. With it buy offerings for sin and incense, prepare grain offerings, and offer them on the altar of the LORD our God. 11Pray for the life of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and for the life of Belshazzar his son, that their days on earth may be like the days of heaven. 12Then the LORD will give us strength and give light to our eyes, and we will live under the protection of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and under the protection of Belshazzar his son. We will serve them for many days and find favor in their sight. 13Pray for us also to the LORD our God, because we have sinned against our God, and to this day the anger and wrath of the LORD have not turned away from us. 14Read this book that we are sending you, and make your confession in the house of the LORD on the feast day and on the appointed days. 15Say: "Righteousness belongs to the LORD our God, but to us belongs shame of face, as it is this day for the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem, 16and for our kings, our princes, our priests, our prophets and our ancestors. 17For we have sinned before the LORD our God. 18We did not trust him, we did not listen to the voice of the LORD our God, and we did not walk in the commandments of the LORD our God that he gave us. 19From the day he brought our ancestors out of the land of Egypt until today, we have rebelled against the LORD our God and drifted far from him, so as not to listen to his voice. 20So this evil and this curse have overtaken us, the curse that the LORD commanded his servant Moses on the day he brought our ancestors out of the land of Egypt to give us a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. 21We did not listen to the voice of the LORD our God in the words of the prophets whom he sent to us. 22Each one of us followed the desire of his own evil heart, serving foreign gods and doing evil in the sight of the LORD our God.
