Jeremiah
Chapter 1 of 52
1The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, one of the priests who lived in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. 2The word of the LORD came to me in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, until Jerusalem was carried into exile in the fifth month. 4The word of the LORD came to me, and the LORD said to me, 5"Before I formed you in your mother's womb I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I set you apart. I made you a prophet to the nations." 6Then I said to him, "Ah, Lord, my Lord! Look, I do not know how to speak, for I am only young." 7But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy,' for you will go everywhere I send you, and you will say everything I command you. 8Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and I will rescue you," says the LORD. 9Then the LORD stretched out his hand to me and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, 10"See, today I have appointed you over nations and kingdoms, to uproot them, to tear them down and to destroy them, and to build and to plant." 11The LORD spoke to me again and said, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I said, "I see a branch of an almond tree." 12The LORD said to me, "You have seen well, for I am watching to carry out what I have spoken." 13The LORD spoke to me a second time. 14The LORD said to me, "Out of the north disaster will break loose on those who live in the land. 15Look, I am calling all the kings of the land of the north," says the LORD. "They will come and set up their thrones, every one of them, at the entrances of the gates of Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah. 16I will pronounce my judgment on them for all their wickedness, because they abandoned me, burned incense to foreign gods, and bowed down to the work of their own hands. 17As for you, get yourself ready. Stand up and tell them everything I command you. Do not be afraid of them and do not be shaken before them, for I am with you to rescue you," says the LORD. 18"Look, today, this very day, I have made you like a fortified city, like an iron pillar and like a bronze wall, strong against the whole land: against the kings of Judah, their officials, the priests and the people of the land. 19They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you and I will rescue you," says the LORD. ‹
