Job
Chapter 1 of 42
1There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. He was upright, pure and righteous, he feared the LORD, and in his heart he kept himself away from every evil deed. 2He had seven sons and three daughters. 3His livestock numbered seven thousand, his sheep three thousand, his camels five hundred, his yoke of oxen five hundred, and his female donkeys five hundred. 4His servants were very many, and his work was great on the earth. He was a noble man in the land of the east, where the sun rises. 5His sons would go and gather together and hold a feast every day, and they would bring their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 6When the days of their feasting were over, Job would send for them to come before the LORD and make atonement for them. He would rise early in the morning and bring sacrifices on their behalf, one for each of them, 7and a calf for the sin of his own soul. 8For Job said, "Perhaps my sons have thought evil against the LORD." Job did this all the days of his life. 9After that day the angels of the LORD came, and Satan came with them and stood in his place. Then the LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "I have gone around the whole earth and walked about under heaven, and now I have come." 11The LORD said to Satan, "Have you not considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth: a pure and righteous man who fears the LORD and keeps his heart away from every evil deed." 12Satan answered before the LORD, "Does Job serve the LORD for nothing? Have you not blessed everything around him and the work of his hands, and multiplied his livestock on the earth? Are you not his guard, inside his house and outside it? 13But stretch out your hand and touch everything he has, and see if he does not curse you to your face." 14Then the LORD said to Satan, "Look, everything he has I hand over to you. Only do not touch him." And Satan went out from the presence of the LORD rejoicing. 15Now on that day Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking in the house of their eldest brother. 16A messenger came to Job and said, "Your oxen were plowing and your female donkeys were grazing beside them, 17when raiders came and seized them and killed your servants with the sword. I alone escaped, and I have come to tell you." 18While he was still telling Job this, another messenger came and said to Job, "Fire fell from heaven and burned up your sheep, and it consumed your shepherds along with them. I alone escaped, and I have come to tell you." 19While he was still telling Job this, a third messenger came and said to Job, "Horsemen and three large bands surrounded us. They seized your camels and your oxen and killed your servants with the sword. I alone escaped, and I have come to tell you." 20While he was still speaking, a fourth messenger came and said to Job, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking in the house of their eldest brother, when suddenly a great wind came from the wilderness and struck the house at its four corners. 21The house fell on your sons and daughters, and they died. I alone escaped, and I have come to tell you." 22When Job heard this, he got up, tore his clothes, shaved the hair of his head, fell to the ground and worshiped. He said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked I will return to the earth. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken. It has happened as the LORD willed. Even so, blessed be the name of the LORD." ‹
