Chapter 1 of 13
1In the second year of the reign of Artaxerxes the Great, on the first day of Nisan, Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Jewish man, had a dream. 2He lived in the city of Susa. He was a great man, and he served in the court of the king's palace. 3He was one of the captives whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away from Jerusalem with Jeconiah king of Judah. 4This was his dream: there were voices and tumult, quaking and thunder, and confusion upon the earth. 5Then two great dragons came, both of them ready to fight, and their roar was loud. 6At their roar the nations made ready for war, to fight against the righteous people. 7It was a day of darkness and gloom, of torment and distress, of affliction and great tumult upon the earth. 8The righteous were shaken. The whole people feared the evils coming upon them, and they made ready to perish. 9They cried out to the LORD, and from their cry there came, as from a small spring of life, a great river with abundant water. 10The light of the sun rose upon it, and the lowly were lifted up and devoured the proud. 11When Mordecai had seen this dream and what the LORD intended to do, he got up and kept it in his heart, and he wanted to understand all of it, even through the night. 12Mordecai was staying in the court with Gabatha and Tharra, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the court and the city. 13He heard the plans they were plotting. He found out and made sure that they had prepared to kill King Artaxerxes, and he told the king about them. 14The king questioned the two eunuchs. They confessed and were condemned. 15The king wrote this matter down in the book of records, and Mordecai also wrote it down. 16The king ordered Mordecai to serve in the court, and he rewarded him for this. 17But Haman, an Agagite by birth, was honored and stood before the king. He wanted to do harm to Mordecai and his people because of the king's two eunuchs. ‹
