Exodus

Chapter 1 of 40
1These are the names of the children of Israel who went into the land of Egypt with Jacob their father. They came, each one with his household. 2Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah, 3Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin, 4Dan, Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5Joseph was already in the land of Egypt. All the people descended from Jacob numbered seventy-five. 6Then Joseph died, and all his brothers, and that whole generation. 7The children of Israel multiplied and filled the land. They became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land was filled with them. 8Then another king rose over Egypt, one who did not know Joseph. 9He said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are great and numerous, and they are stronger than we are. 10Come, let us deal shrewdly with them. If they keep multiplying and war comes upon us, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." 11So he set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor. They built fortified cities for Pharaoh: Pithom, Raamses, and On, which is the city of the sun. 12But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and grew strong, and the Egyptians came to loathe the children of Israel. 13The Egyptians made the children of Israel serve them with harshness. 14They made their lives bitter with hard labor, with mortar and brick, and with every kind of work in the field. All the work they forced on them was harsh. 15The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives. The name of one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other was Puah. 16He said to them, "When you deliver the Hebrew women and they come to the time of birth, if it is a boy, kill him. But if it is a girl, let her live." 17But the midwives feared the LORD. They did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, and they let the boys live. 18So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?" 19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the women of Egypt. They give birth before the midwife arrives." 20So the LORD was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong. 21Because the midwives feared the LORD, they established households for themselves. 22Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every boy born to the Hebrews, throw into the river. But let every girl live."
